Junior Golf Update.
Nurturing the Next Generation of Golfers
Pleasant Point Golf has been nurturing young golfers through its Junior Golf coaching programme for several years now. Each Sunday morning, during the period of Daylight Saving Time, the golf course comes alive with the enthusiasm and energy of young golfers honing their skills and passion for the game. This programme takes a brief hiatus over the December school holiday period, allowing families to enjoy the festive season without interruption.
Programme Overview
At present, the Junior Golf coaching sessions are divided into two, one-hour segments to cater to different age groups. The first session is designed for children aged 6 to 10 years, fostering the initial stages of their golfing journey. The second session is dedicated to the slightly older group, aged 10 to 15 years, where they can further develop their skills and understanding of the game.
The sessions are well-attended, with up to 10 young golfers participating currently. Notably, the youngest participant is just 5 years old, demonstrating the program's appeal and accessibility for even the youngest enthusiasts. The younger group benefits from the support of their parents, who actively participate and share in their child's development, creating a nurturing and encouraging environment.
Progress and Achievements
Among the older cohort, three young golfers are making remarkable progress. Two of them are diligently working towards achieving a handicap, with aspirations to compete in the Saturday competitions. Their dedication and passion to the sport is commendable, and they serve as role models for their peers.
One standout participant is Charlotte Low, a young lady who first joined the coaching programme at the age of 10. Over the years, Charlotte has blossomed into a solid young golfer with a promising future. Her handicap has impressively reduced to 15, and she has set her sights on representing Aorangi. Last year, Charlotte was selected to attend the national Eagles U17 competition in Cromwell, where she gained invaluable experience alongside three other young boys from different Aorangi clubs.
Charlotte's journey has seen her participate in numerous Junior Opens in the Canterbury Region, allowing her to compete with other young golfers and experience a variety of top courses. Recently, she has been receiving professional coaching from Harry Smith, a young professional from Tinwald. This additional guidance and support is helping Charlotte refine her skills and build a strong foundation for her future in golf.
Support and Funding
Pleasant Point Golf Club is committed to supporting its junior golfers and their families. The club assists Charlotte's parents with transport costs to attend coaching sessions and events, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder her progress. Funds raised through the 'Junior Golf' initiative during the annual classic are utilized to fund travel expenses, as well as to maintain and improve the facilities for the young golfers.
The funds have been instrumental in establishing the Orange Junior tees on the course, installing distance signage in the practice area, and acquiring various coaching aids. These improvements enhance the overall experience for the junior golfers, providing them with the necessary tools and resources to excel in the sport.
Community and Future Goals
The Junior Golf coaching programme at Pleasant Point Golf is more than just a training ground for young golfers; it is a close-knit community that fosters camaraderie, sportsmanship, and a love for the game. The programme's success is a testament to the dedication of the coaches, the support of the parents, and the enthusiasm of the young participants.
Looking ahead, the club aims to expand the programme and reach more young golfers in the region. By continuing to offer high-quality coaching, support, and opportunities for competition, Pleasant Point Golf Club aspires to cultivate a new generation of talented and passionate golfers who will carry the legacy of the sport forward.
In conclusion, the Junior Golf coaching programme at Pleasant Point Golf is a shining example of how a community can come together to support and develop young talent. Through dedication, support, and a shared passion for golf, the programme is creating a pathway for young golfers to achieve their dreams and make their mark in the world of golf.
